CITY OF DÜSSELDORF HONOURS 100,000TH STUDENT AT IU INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES

  • Germany's largest university welcomes its 100,000th student, Fynn Schlamm from Radevormwald, to the IU Düsseldorf campus.
  • Düsseldorf's alderman Dr. Michael Rauterkus presents congratulations from the city.
  • More and more new talent for the business and science location.

Düsseldorf, 9 November 2022 For the first time, more than 100,000 students are studying at the IU International University of Applied Sciences (IU), Germany's largest university, at over 30 locations in Germany. 2,000 of them study at the IU Campus Düsseldorf in Hildebrandtstr. 24 c, including Fynn Schlamm from Radevormwald, who takes on a very special role when he starts his studies in October. He is the 100,000th student and was recently surprised with a fitting celebration.

Dr. Michael Rauterkus, City of Düsseldorf Alderman for Economics, Digitalisation, Human Resources and Organisation, personally conveyed congratulations from Lord Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller: "We congratulate IU on this anniversary. 100,000 students is not only a remarkable number, it also underlines the success of the university. The development of the Düsseldorf campus since 2011 - then with 33 students, today with 2,000 in 25 degree programmes - shows that Düsseldorf as a business and science location produces particularly good talent. And talent is what we need. Education and science are the raw materials of our country and the students of tomorrow are the ones we can build on. It is important to promote them in order to move our country forward."

One such new talent is Fynn Schlamm, who has just begun his learning journey. The 18-year-old is studying industrial engineering and opted for the dual study model: two days a week of theory at IU and three days of practice at his partner company SPAX International. "I think this combination is great, because it allows me to put what I've learned directly into practice. After school, I didn't just want to go back to school, I wanted to get hands-on," says the honours student, who is very happy with his decision after his first few weeks on campus and at the company. "What I also really like are the small study groups on campus. We are on average 17 students in one course. That makes it much more personal and individual than sitting together with hundreds in a classic lecture hall."

IU, as a pioneer of personalised and digitalised education, offers maximum flexibility with its technical innovations not only to distance learners. Dual students also enjoy the advantages of being able to complete part of their theory from anywhere. "About 50 percent of my courses take place online at the virtual IU campus and in the IU Learn app, and the other 50 percent take place on site. With the online courses, there is naturally more time for other things because there is no need to travel. But I also find the on-site courses great because there are subjects that are simply better to learn in person," reveals Fynn Schlamm.

In addition to the modern learning experience, the future industrial engineer appreciates the high level of personal support at IU. Even during his application process, study advisor Marcel Pütz was closely at his side. On Welcome Day, Fynn got to know his Study Guide on campus, his personal contact person who is always there to help with questions and challenges during his studies.

Campus manager Sabine Walther-Eising presented Fynn with a gift package consisting of a semester ticket for a whole year, a shopping voucher, an IU hoodie and a card with personal wishes to mark the milestone.

Sabrina Schreckert, HR Manager at SPAX International, accepted an official certificate on behalf of Fynn as his practice partner. "It is also an honour for us to be a part of this successful development and to accompany Fynn on his career path." SPAX International, known for its cross recessed chipboard screws, has invested in the training of new junior employees since the beginning. In addition to an in-house training workshop for traditional apprenticeships, the company cooperates with universities such as the IU International University of Applied Sciences and boasts an above-average takeover rate.

Düsseldorf's alderman Rauterkus also congratulated the student and looks forward to even more interfaces between science and politics in the future. A first cooperation project between the Economic Development Department, the City Marketing Department and the IU with the Real Estate Management study programme underlines this importance. "We are already looking forward to the first analysis results. They help us to observe how our city is developing based on numbers and facts. We are very happy about the cooperation and look forward to further joint initiatives."
