2,404 votes for dedicated tutors

A total of 195 nominations were received for 101 tutors. 58 tutors from 31 institutes and universities qualified for the voting phase, in which 2,404 votes were cast. The categories evaluated were "Subject-matter expertise & comprehensibility," "Support & accessibility," and "Motivation & commitment."

Gerrit Stephan from the ATN Academy took first place, followed by Petra Reuter from the Koblenz Chamber of Industry and Commerce Academy in second place. Dr Florian Perst completed the top three.

Quick feedback and an open ear

Dr Florian Perst has been working as a tutor in the Marketing & Management department at IU since 2022. He wants to be readily and reliably available to his students.

About the “Tutor of the Year” award

The title "Tutor of the Year" is awarded annually as part of the EDUCATION. DIGITAL. NETWORKED. study prize by the German Association of Distance Learning Providers (Bundesverband der Fernstudienanbieter e. V.) in cooperation with Fernstudium Direkt, the comparison portal for continuing education and studies. The award recognises tutors working in state-approved distance learning courses or accredited distance learning programmes. The selection highlights the crucial importance of professional learning support in distance learning and provides a platform for those who guide learners professionally, personally, and with motivation on their educational journey.

The 61st national award ceremony of the renowned school and youth competition took place from 28 to 31 May 2026 at Schaeffler AG in Herzogenaurach, for which 159 young researchers had qualified. In total, over 11,000 young researchers registered for Jugend forscht 2026 with more than 6,000 projects.

The AI Special Prize was presented to the winner by Prof. Dr Kamal Bhattacharya, Vice-Rector for Research and Transfer at IU. Prior to this, the IU had already awarded 16 AI Special Prizes at the Jugend forscht regional competitions. The IU awards the Special Prize at national level with a cash prize of 1,000 euros, thereby specifically supporting young talents who use AI responsibly and whose projects deliver social added value.
 

AI Special Prize at the National Final for the ‘Jacob’ language model 

With his project ‘Jacob’, winner Magnus Schlinsog developed an AI language model that uses artificial intelligence to convert texts into Easy Language. The aim is to make information more accessible to people who rely on language that is easy to understand. To achieve this, Schlinsog trained an existing model using prepared examples in Easy Language and verified the results, partly through feedback from the target group. The jury recognised the project as a particularly innovative example of the responsible and socially relevant use of artificial intelligence. Magnus Schlinsog had already impressed at regional level with his project, winning the AI Special Prize in Brandenburg. He is now building on this success. “On behalf of the IU, I warmly congratulate Magnus Schlinsog on this outstanding achievement,” says Prof. Dr Bhattacharya. 

IU: Learning to work with AI as early as possible 

As Germany’s largest University of Applied Sciences and a pioneer in integrating AI skills into degree programmes, IU is convinced that anyone who wants to shape the future must understand AI and be able to use it responsibly – in academia, in the workplace and beyond. For this reason, IU has been using the AI-powered learning companion Syntea since 2023 and systematically integrates AI skills into its university curricula using its proprietary Job Readiness Framework. “We see the added value of AI skills in students every day in our university operations. The sooner teenagers and young adults understand where AI helps them and in which tasks humans remain indispensable, the better – for themselves and their starting position when entering the workforce, but also for academic projects,” says Prof. Dr Bhattacharya.

Erfurt, 7 May 2026. In 2026, IU International University of Applied Sciences will sponsor the “Artificial Intelligence Special Prize” at the prestigious Jugend forscht competition for school pupils and young people, which will be awarded for the first time this year. With this special prize, the university is establishing an award for outstanding projects in the field of artificial intelligence. In the regional competitions of Jugend forscht, 16 projects have already been awarded an AI prize. From 28 to 31 May 2026, the regional winners, including the recipients of the “Artificial Intelligence” Special Prize, will take part in the 61st national final at Schaeffler AG in Herzogenaurach.

“Young talents who are exploring the positive and responsible use of artificial intelligence should be given special support. They represent the future for Germany as a centre of research and innovation,” says Dr Kamal Bhattacharya, Vice-Rector for Research and Transfer and Professor of Computer Science at IU, and its patron for the AI Special Prize at Jugend forscht. “We at IU are delighted to be making a contribution to this by launching a special AI prize in collaboration with Germany’s best-known competition for young researchers.”

IU sees itself as a pioneer in integrating artificial intelligence into its courses and teaching. Since 2023, IU has been using the AI-powered learning companion Syntea, which supports over 90,000 distance learners and trains them in the professional use of AI. With the Job Readiness Framework , IU has also recently created a framework for teaching that specifically prepares students for an AI-driven job market.

Award-winning AI projects that add value to research and society

By establishing the special AI prizes at Jugend forscht, the IU is specifically supporting young talents who view AI as a key interdisciplinary skill in their projects and who make a contribution to society. Sixteen projects from the fields of technology, mathematics/computer science, earth and spatial sciences, the world of work, biology and chemistry have already met these criteria in the regional competitions.

One example is the “Jacob” project by Magnus Schlinsog (18) from Humboldt-Gymnasium Potsdam. He developed an AI language model that masters the rules of “easy language”, thereby making it easier for people with learning difficulties to access AI applications. The project is a powerful example of digital inclusion and education for all, key priorities for the IU. Magnus was awarded first prize in the mathematics/computer science category in Brandenburg, as well as a special prize for artificial intelligence.

Elena Reinhold (18) and Fiona Feike (17) from Eichsfeld Gymnasium in Duderstadt carried out research as part of the project: “Real, AI or Fake? Artificial Intelligence and its Role in Fake News,” looking at how well people can distinguish between genuine news, AI-generated texts and fake news. This is a topic that has also recently been researched at the IU: according to a representative IU study from 2025, 90 per cent of respondents now regard fake news as a serious threat to democracy and freedom. Developing media literacy and dealing effectively with disinformation are therefore key priorities for the IU. Elena and Fiona were awarded second prize in the ‘Working World’ category in Lower Saxony, the special prize for Artificial Intelligence and the special prize from the Lower Saxony Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs. These awards underscore the project’s high social relevance.

About the study

The study "Fact or Fake? Media Literacy in Germany" by IU International University of Applied Sciences (IU) examines people's trust in the media, the role of social media, and fake news and deepfakes and their impact. Erfurt, 9 April 2026. Julia Loos, a student from Erfurt, has received a major accolade: she is studying for a dual degree in Tourism Management at IU International University of Applied Sciences in Erfurt and has been accepted into the prestigious DRV Young Talents Programme 2026 – as one of only three participants selected nationwide in the student category.

The German Travel Association’s (DRV) support programme is regarded as one of the most important initiatives for promoting young talent in the tourism industry. It is aimed at particularly committed and high-achieving students who have the potential to actively shape the future of tourism.

The Erfurt student impressed not only with her academic achievements in her dual study programme, but also through her voluntary work. Alongside her studies, she is heavily involved in the student-run association Dual Thinking e.V., demonstrating how social engagement and professional development can go hand in hand. “I am delighted to have been accepted into the DRV Young Talents Programme. For me, this is a great opportunity to expand my network within the industry and gain new perspectives for my professional future,” says the student.

IU also regards the award as a strong signal: “The fact that one of our students is among the few participants selected nationwide underscores the quality and practical focus of our dual degree programme in Tourism Management. Such successes demonstrate that we are specifically preparing our students for demanding career paths within the industry,” says Dr Peter Neumann, Professor of Tourism Economics and Head of the Hospitality, Tourism & Event Department at IU.

The dual study programme combines academic training with intensive practical experience in companies within the tourism industry. Through the model of alternating or split weeks, students gain valuable insights into real-world work processes whilst simultaneously building a robust professional network.

Upon acceptance into the DRV Young Talents Programme, the student gains access to exclusive industry events, mentoring opportunities and a network of leading tourism professionals. Over 80 applications from across Germany were received for the 2026 DRV Young Talents Programme. A panel of experts selected ten young professionals from these – including just three students nationwide. “Anyone who specifically supports young talent today is strengthening innovation and quality in the travel industry in the long term,” emphasises Ulrike Katz, Vice-President of DRV.

Selected participants can look forward to a year-long support programme offering exclusive insights into the industry – including attendance at the DRV Annual Conference in the Azores on 15 April, as well as other specialist events and policy forums in Berlin and Brussels.

Position: AI & Software Professional

Rahul Rajkumar Bhoyar impressed with his strong vision for the future of work: AI should empower people, promote creativity, and strengthen collaboration – not replace it. Building on his studies at IU, he combines technological excellence with creative power and leadership skills to drive forward a forward-looking, human-centred use of artificial intelligence.

As part of his research at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), he was involved in the development of an AI multi-agent platform that has been deployed at over 15 universities and reduced faculty workloads by 60 per cent.

Currently, as a senior data scientist at Publicis Sapient, Bhoyar leads the development of AI agent systems that redefine creative and marketing-related workflows. One of the AI platforms uses autonomous multimodal agents to generate personalised marketing content, accelerating creative content delivery by up to 50 per cent and demonstrating how AI can augment human creativity at scale.

Hannes Berthold (24), Dresden
Degree: B.A. Media Design
Position: Marketing and Communications Manager & Filmmaker

With his short film SOLACE, Hannes Berthold impressively demonstrates how artistic ambition, emotional storytelling, and technical precision can work together.

The film was created as part of his bachelor's thesis in media design at IU and is characterised by a clear creative vision and the experimental use of AI tools for visual effects. SOLACE has already won the IU Reel Award and was selected for the Snowdance Festival in Essen, where it was presented to a wide and enthusiastic audience on February 6.

Building on this success, Berthold worked as Head of VFX on the feature film “Make Me Feel,” one of Germany's largest independent film projects. There, he was responsible for the VFX pipeline, led the team, and delivered 41 final shots.

Lena Willmann impresses with her extraordinary educational background and her strong commitment to sustainable construction. She was the first in her family to graduate from university - with top marks in civil engineering at IU. Motivated by her success, she developed the desire to continue her academic career in a top international environment.

Her goal: the highly competitive master's programme “Engineering for Sustainable Development” at the University of Cambridge. Despite initial doubts given the low acceptance rate, she applied – encouraged by her IU professors Micha Buch and Leon Jänicke – and was successful. Since March 2025, she has been studying at Cambridge and working on solutions for more sustainable construction practices.

Florian Christian Milder (28), Bergkamen
Degree: B.Sc. Nutrition Science
Position: MA student & area manager for enteral nutrition

A serious accident abruptly ended Florian Christian Milder's dream of a career in pediatric nursing. But instead of giving up, he decided to make a fresh start: with the help of a distance learning programme in nutritional science at IU. The flexible structure of the programme enabled him to successfully complete his studies during his recovery.

In January 2025, he completed his bachelor's degree – one of the greatest personal achievements of his life. Today, he works as a regional manager for enteral nutrition and is also studying for a master's degree in health management at IU.

“IU not only gave me the opportunity to study, but also a new perspective. I have learned that setbacks can be the beginning of something great,” says Milder.

In her master's thesis, Melanie Fender developed an innovative teaching concept for the training of occupational therapists. By combining occupational therapy practice with the principles of planetary health, she shows new ways to make therapeutic work more sustainable and to sensitise the profession to climate and health protection.

Since October 2025, she has been implementing her concept in her own teaching, setting an example for other educators.

Stefan Mageney is being honoured for his many years of exceptional volunteer work. Following the devastating tsunami in Southeast Asia in 2004, he initiated a benefit festival to raise funds for the victims. This initiative later led to the founding of the association "Wuppertal hilft!" (Wuppertal Helps!), which Mageney co-founded and of which he remains the chairman. For many years, the association has organised numerous fundraising events for social causes.

Engagement through strong networking in the music scene

Thanks to his close contacts in the music scene, the rock singer repeatedly succeeded in recruiting many musicians for charity performances. The participating artists waived their fees. Since 2005, this has raised approximately €500,000, which has been donated to foundations and associations supporting people in need.

Beyond his work with the club, Stefan Mageney also made a social impact: After a severe bout of COVID-19, he participated in a campaign by the Ministry of Health. Using the hashtag #IchHatteCorona (I Had COVID), he called for people to take the disease seriously.

Back in 2016, the city of Wuppertal had already recognised his commitment and awarded him the "Wuppertaler" prize for his services to "Wuppertal hilft!" (Wuppertal Helps!). The Federal President's Medal of Merit, now awarded to him, is the logical next step in the national recognition of his lasting contribution to the common good.

IU congratulates Stefan Mageney most sincerely – for his exemplary role, which visibly strengthens society and community.

Jenny Elisa Pabst, from Hamburg, investigated in her master's thesis at IU International University of Applied Sciences how Hamburg daycare center directors promote the diversity skills of their teams with regard to the inclusion of autistic children. Pabst will receive the IU Diversity Award 2025 for this work. This award is presented twice a year by IU and recognises outstanding theses that address diversity, equal opportunities, and social participation in a scientifically sound and practically relevant manner.

“With her work, Jenny Elisa Pabst makes an important contribution to the further development of inclusive practices in early childhood education. Her findings illustrate the key role that managers play with regard to inclusion and how they can contribute to it. Her work combines in-depth expertise with great professionalism and empathy,” explained Ariane Weber, staff member in the Equal Opportunities Office of IU International University of Applied Sciences and project manager of the IU Diversity Award, justifying the jury's decision.

Inclusive daycare centers need strong leadership.

The award-winning master's thesis by Jenny Elisa Pabst focuses on how managers in daycare centers can specifically promote the diversity skills of their staff in order to enable inclusive and discrimination-sensitive practices. The focus is on the inclusion of autistic children, who in everyday daycare life still face structural barriers as well as normative and sometimes discriminatory notions of "disability" and "autism."

The results of the master's thesis clearly show that daycare center directors play a key role . They act as multipliers between children, staff, the sponsoring organisation, and families, and can make a significant contribution to an inclusive organisational culture. At the same time, it becomes clear that Germany still has considerable ground to make up in implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities – particularly in the areas of accessibility and structural support.

Nevertheless, Pabst observes a positive development: "Societal understanding of autism and neurodiversity is growing noticeably."

Science, practice and personal perspective

Jenny Elisa Pabst's motivation for her thesis grew over several years. Even during her bachelor's degree in social work, she worked continuously in educational settings with neurodivergent children, completed internships, and participated in university research projects on equal opportunities for preschool children. She subsequently continued this commitment as a manager in an inclusive preschool. Currently, Pabst works in the preschool provider advisory service of the Hamburg BSFB (Association for Social Services and Family Support), advising preschool providers and childcare facilities, including on the topics of inclusion and autism.

Her empirical study is based, among other things, on interviews with daycare center directors who, despite high motivation, are often limited in their work by restricted time, personnel, and financial resources. These lack of resources can ultimately lead to barriers in the care of autistic children in daycare centers and restrict their access to childcare services. The work gains particular depth through its own neurodivergent perspective, which is reflected upon and professionally integrated into the research.

“What’s special about this work is the consistent connection between scientific findings and professional practice,” says Pabst. “My goal is that research doesn’t just sit on a shelf, but provides concrete support to children, families, professionals, and organisations.”

As part of her master's thesis, Pabst collaborated with daycare center directors from six of Hamburg's seven districts, whom she does not professionally supervise. She will strategically share the insights gained within her professional field and apply them in her consulting practice so that as many Hamburg daycare centers, children, and families as possible can benefit.

Studying as a solution for self-realization

Jenny Elisa Pabst comes from a non-academic background and is therefore particularly proud of her master's degree in "Pedagogy, Educational Counseling, and Leadership," which she was able to finance in part with a Germany Scholarship. Distance learning at IU gave her maximum flexibility to combine work, family, and studies. Thanks to modern digital teaching methods and additional courses for acquiring future skills, she is now also considered an "AI expert" on her team.

“Special thanks go to my programme director, Karin Thiel. The professional exchange with her, as well as with numerous other lecturers and fellow students, was incredibly helpful in my successful graduation,” said Pabst. She doesn't rule out pursuing a doctorate in the future, but above all wants to remain in the field and actively contribute to quality development in childcare.

About the IU Diversity Award

IU International University of Applied Sciences has been awarding the IU Diversity Award twice a year since 2018. The jury consists of a ten-member team of staff members from various departments. IU students have the opportunity to submit their bachelor's or master's theses. In 2025, in addition to Jenny Elisa Pabst, Alina Klein from Bochum also received the award for her work on improving the treatment of queer refugees in Germany. Creative solutions sought for an industry in transition

The real estate industry is facing a complex polycrisis in the face of climate change, the energy crisis, regulatory consolidation, volatile markets and social change. Traditional approaches are becoming less and less effective. Sustainable solutions emerge where sustainability, digitalisation, social innovation and new business models are consistently considered together.

In her thesis, titled "LGBTQIA+ in the Context of Refuge," Alina Klein explores the intersectional challenges and needs of queer people with refugee experience. The goal of her work is to create visibility, promote understanding, and provide professionals with concrete practical options.

"Many queer refugees experience double marginalisation - because of their origins as well as their sexual orientation or gender identity," explains the 28-year-old graduate. "My work aims to demonstrate that more is needed than symbolism - namely, real spaces, protection concepts, and awareness-raising in everyday working life."

Theory and practice closely interlinked

Her thesis was closely linked to her practical work at the Protestant Youth Welfare Service in Bochum. There, she works in a self-sufficiency project for unaccompanied minor refugees. She also conducted interviews with professionals from a network partner in Bochum that provides educational work on sexual and gender diversity and targeted services for queer refugees.

IU's dual study model offered her the ideal foundation for combining theory and practice: "I was able to directly apply my knowledge to my everyday professional life – and, conversely, to work on the topics that concern me in practice in a scientifically sound manner. The high degree of flexibility in the design of the examinations allowed me to translate my passion into an academic work."

Even during her studies, Alina Klein was already involved beyond the curriculum. She organised training courses on discrimination protection and implemented awareness-raising campaigns in her own work environment, such as workshops for young refugees, flyers, stickers, and rainbow pins. "It's often the little things that have a big impact. One client told me that our campaign made her feel truly seen. That was very touching," she recalls.

Awarded the IU Diversity Award

Alina Klein’s work was honoured with the IU Diversity Award 2025 for its particular social relevance and practice-oriented depth.

"Alina impressively succeeds in illuminating a highly sensitive topic not only with a scientifically sound approach, but also with tangible empathy and practical relevance. Her work highlights what is often overlooked in everyday life – and provides concrete ideas on how professionals can better support queer refugees. An outstanding example of how science can help shape social change," says Ariane Weber, employee in the Equal Opportunities Office and project manager of the Diversity Award at IU International University of Applied Sciences.

Even beyond her graduation, Alina Klein continues to pursue her vision. She recently began a master's degree in social work with a focus on trauma education, refugee issues, and migration, and she also envisions pursuing a doctorate in the long term. Her goal: to share her own experiences with students and encourage them in their future roles as social workers.

The IU Diversity Award jury consists of a ten-person team of employees from various departments. While Felix Würkner impressed with a cross-media campaign for gender and sexual diversity to prevent homophobia and transphobia, Ockelmann addressed the topic of inclusion in old age and presented a queer-sensitive mission statement for open senior citizen work. The IU Diversity Award aims to contribute to raising public awareness of the research field of diversity and carries a prize of 500 euros. Hanover, 16 May, 2025. The winners of the IU Innovation Award 2025 have been announced: The most innovative theses in the field of construction and real estate were honoured on May 14 at this year's Real Estate Arena in Hanover. Students and graduates from eleven different German universities submitted their bachelor's or master's theses. Three of the four award-winning projects were created by students at IU International University of Applied Sciences – a strong signal for the academic standards and practical training provided.

Innovative solutions for the property and construction industry

First place, endowed with 2,500 euros, went to Aslinur Semizoglu from Aschaffenburg University of Applied Sciences. Her empirical analysis of the need for change in the future office real estate market thoroughly impressed the jury.

Sabine Feidiker, a bachelor's student in construction project management at IU International University of Applied Sciences, was delighted to take second place and receive 1,500 euros. She impressed with her work on the building physics potential of greening buildings.

Third place went to Moritz Bergmann, a master's student in real estate management at IU, with his analysis of the political regulation of the European Green Deal. His work was awarded 1,000 euros.

The additional special prize of 750 euros went to Fabian Rass, a bachelor's student in architecture at IU. He impressed the jury with his conceptual work on iconographic approaches in the construction of a visitor center for Neuschwanstein Castle.

Florian Ebrecht, professor at IU and initiator of the Innovation Award, emphasised: "The award once again underscores the diversity and relevance of our students' research in Germany. Topics such as sustainability, regulation, and architectural innovations reflect the current state of the real estate industry and demonstrate how much we need new approaches and food for thought."

With the IU Innovation Award, IU International University of Applied Sciences promotes creative, scientifically sound solutions to current challenges. Bachelor's and master's theses that stand out through innovative approaches or practical implementations were eligible for submission. This year, the real estate industry was the focus of the Innovation Award: The award sought pioneering innovations and new perspectives in the areas of decarbonisation, smart energy solutions, neighborly cooperation, and new levels of service and communication. The award was initiated in cooperation with the meravis real estate group, which provided the total prize money of 5,750 euros.

Research & Innovation outside of work

The three IU award winners earned their award-winning degrees via distance learning. The resulting flexibility not only gave them sufficient time for professional and personal commitments, but also gave them the freedom to develop innovative solutions. The distance learners received support through personal mentoring from their instructors and the help of digital systems, such as the AI learning assistant "Syntea," to personalise their learning experience in the best possible way and promote individual growth.

The award honours outstanding student work and projects in dual studies that are particularly innovative, practice-oriented and at the cutting edge of current research. Anna Glaubitz from Berlin receives jury prize for her women's protection app ‘asone’

The jury prize for the IU Spirit Award 2025 goes to Anna Glaubitz. The graduate of the dual study programme in media design at the IU campus in Berlin was honoured for her app project ‘asone’, which she developed in collaboration with her practice partner femtis GmbH. The smartphone application is designed as a protective app to guard against violence in partnerships and to help prevent femicides. Every day in Germany, a woman is the victim of an attempted murder by her partner or ex-partner. Every three days, this crime is successful.

Anna Glaubitz's goal was to create an application that provides discreet support to women at risk. Disguised as a period app, a link takes those affected to the actual asone application, where they can seek help anonymously or using a name of their choice. The idea for the app includes measures to overcome previous hurdles such as language barriers or a lack of accessibility, as well as to improve mental support.

“We chose to award the prize to ‘asone’ by Anna Glaubitz because she uses her design skills to develop an innovative idea for discreet, low-threshold help, while deliberately avoiding previous hurdles for victims of domestic violence. Anna's courage in tackling such a distressing but socially highly relevant problem is impressive and we are honouring it with the jury prize,” said Prof. Dr Lisa Unterberg, jury member, professor of social work and deputy pro-rector for dual studies at IU International University of Applied Sciences.

Learning more efficiently with AI: Johannes Haberlah from Hamburg wins the audience award for ‘Smart Flashcards’

The winner of the audience award of the IU Spirit Award 2025 is Johannes Haberlah from the dual study programme in computer science at IU campus in Hamburg. He convinced his fellow students in an online presentation of his project ‘Smart Flashcards’ and received the most votes for it.

Smart-Flashcards.com is an innovative web app that makes studying easier for students. With the help of artificial intelligence, the platform automatically creates flashcards from documents such as lecture notes. Modern spaced repetition algorithms make learning particularly effective and long-lasting. AI-generated hints also support the learning process by providing targeted food for thought. IU International University of Applied Sciences has been presenting the IU Spirit Award annually since 2024. The five-member jury currently consists of Prof. Dr Peter Neumann (Professorship of Tourism Business), Prof. Dr Hendrik Hubbertz (Professorship of Mechanical Engineering), Prof. Dr Lisa Unterberg (Professorship of Social Work), Prof. Dr Felix Wölfle (Professorship of Tourism Business) and Prof. Dr Florian Hummel (Pro-Rector of Dual Studies). These awards celebrate exceptional careers, entrepreneurial achievements, and innovative projects in sustainability and digital education. IU Alumni from across the globe were invited to apply in five categories, facing evaluation by a panel of IU professors and experts. For the first time, the public determined the final winners, with the jury selecting three finalists per category, whose profiles were featured in Instagram Reels. Category: Entrepreneurship 

Josefin Krone (25), Berlin 
Degree: B.Sc. Speech Therapy

Josefin Krone impressed the jury with her entrepreneurial concept, “Sprachspatz,” an app designed to reduce lengthy waiting times for speech therapy appointments. The app offers personalised exercises and interactive content to support children and families awaiting therapy, while also focusing on prevention and collaboration with speech therapy practices.

Josefin, a qualified speech therapist and IU graduate, developed the idea during her studies, inspired by her academic research on "waiting times in speech therapy." She co-founded the business with Afi Huguette Kreyling, whom she met through IU’s “we Female Founders” network. Together, they created a company that combines their unique expertise. As part of her role, Josefin designs exercises and instructional materials for the app.

Vainqueur Kilindo Bulambo’s groundbreaking research in artificial intelligence earned him the most votes in this category. His work focuses on biodiversity protection: “My research focussed on the use of AI to classify animal sounds using acoustic data collected by remote acoustic sensors installed in the animals' natural habitat. The prototype developed as part of my thesis demonstrated the usefulness of AI to protect animals and enable automatic and immediate monitoring.”

The 26-year-old is currently working on other AI-supported projects, such as wildlife detection in photos taken by forest camera traps.

Nina Warga (23), Böblingen
Degree: B.Sc. Psychology

After Nina Warga completed her bachelor's degree in psychology with top marks (1.0 for her bachelor's thesis and an overall grade point average of 1.6), she immediately began a consecutive master's programme, in which her grade point average is currently 1.0. Alongside her studies, the 23-year-old high-flyer has started reviewing specialist books for a German trade journal. Her first review appeared last year. She is also a volunteer with the ‘Psychologists/Psychotherapists for Future’ organisation, where she contributes her psychological expertise to dealing with the climate crisis and promoting a sustainable future. She is also active in professional policy in the ‘German Psychotherapists Association’. After completing her master's degree, Nina Warga will start training as a child and youth psychotherapist, for which she has already signed the contract. She is looking forward to further developing her knowledge in the field of young people's mental health.

Sina Rubenwolf (34), Einbeck

Sina Rubenwolf successfully completed her bachelor's degree in special education in just two years and six months. “With two small children and a husband who works shifts, it was often a big challenge and required a lot of organisation,” reveals the award winner. She used every minute to make progress, to learn and to realise her dream. With success: the 34-year-old now works as a class teacher in a day education centre and is proud of her perseverance and achievements.

“Felix's work impressively demonstrates how media can be used creatively to reduce interpersonal prejudices and make queer life realities more visible,” said Nicola Schmidt-Geheb, equal opportunities officer at IU. 

A personal project close to his heart 

As someone who identifies as part of the LGBTQIA+ community, Felix Würkner is well aware of the obstacles and challenges that people can face, both as adolescents and as adults. “Queer children and young people need more support, representation and visibility,” says Würkner. “With my work, I want to make a small contribution to reducing homophobia and transphobia.” 

For his bachelor's thesis, Felix Würkner conducted interviews with six queer people from Berlin. Their stories are at the heart of the campaign – six different life backgrounds, six different sexualities, six different gender identities and many different reactions they have experienced in dealing with their fellow human beings. Emotional, profound and enlightening.

“The results of my research show how important it is to start education early on – for both young people and adults,” explains Würkner. Surveys at Berlin educational institutions, for example, have shown that there is a need for action here to give teachers in particular more confidence in dealing with queer topics. Awareness workshops and information brochures could help here. Digital and social media, which are used primarily by younger people, would in turn create visibility and representation. Accordingly, Würkner designed his #ColourFueledHearts concept for many different media channels. 

With the IU Diversity Award, IU honors not only Würkner's scientific achievements but also his commitment to greater tolerance in society. 

From theory to the world wide web 

Würkner implemented the cross-media campaign, which was initially developed fictitiously, before he had even completed his studies. The content produced can be seen on Instagram and YouTube under the hashtag #ColourFueledHearts and is free to share.

One special aspect of his work is that Würkner tried to integrate queer influences into almost all areas of his work. For example, the campaign logo was inspired by the works of the American gay graphic designer Kyle Letendre. Its color scheme is based on the colors of the trans flag. The color gradient underscores the idea that gender and sexuality are a kind of spectrum and that there is more than just black and white. In addition to his queer interview partners, Würkner also worked with a queer photography student who helped with the implementation. “I even developed a custom font for the project, which I put together from letters from children to their parents, including mine, to bridge the gap between content and design here as well,” says Würkner.

About Felix Würkner 

Felix Würkner is 34 years old and has been living in Berlin for five years. Before his studies, he gained experience in various creative professions, worked as a dancer for several years and now works as a graphic designer in an advertising agency. A dual study programme in his early 30s gave him the opportunity to further his education in his favorite industry and gain practical experience in his company at the same time. At IU, he studied in a split week model – two days at the university, three days at the company – and was thus able to apply his new knowledge directly. With his passion for creative projects, he is pursuing the goal of gaining a foothold in the advertising industry as an art director. As the uncle of a little nephew and a little niece, he wants nothing more than “[...] that the two grow up to be open and enlightened people who don't have to fear the fear of rejection if they ever realize that they feel a little ‘different’.”

In my work, I attach great importance to imparting knowledge in an understandable and practical way, creating an inspiring learning environment, and supporting and encouraging my students on their individual educational paths," says Prof. Dr Katharina Peinemann.

The competition was fierce: A total of 70 nominated tutors, including 14 from IU International University of Applied Sciences, competed for more than 3,000 votes in the online voting. "Based on their nominations alone, they are all among Germany's most popular tutors," said Mirco Fretter, President of the German Association of Distance Learning Providers. The voting remained exciting until the very end. Ultimately, the average score achieved through positive evaluation statements determined the ranking.

Erfurt, 15 July 2024. AI learning buddy “Syntea”, developed by IU International University of Applied Sciences (IU), demonstrates how artificial intelligence (AI) can take education to a whole new level. It has been in use as a personal learning assistant in almost all IU online courses since mid-2023 and makes learning more effective, faster and sustainable. The advanced use of AI technologies and the significant contribution that Syntea makes to the personalisation and democratisation of education have received both national and international recognition, as demonstrated by two recent awards: German Mittelstand e.V. presented the AI solution with the GM Innovation Award 2024 in Munich on 8 July, and a few days earlier, IU received the British Global EdTech Award 2024 for Syntea in the category for “Best AI Integration”.

The Global EdTech Awards recognise the world's leading EdTech companies, products and projects for their contribution to digital education. IU received the award for the best AI integration. The award ceremony took place on 20 June 2024 in London. 

The GM Innovation Award is presented by the German Mittelstand e.V. to inspiring innovations by entrepreneurs. Among other things, the degree of innovation, the willingness to take risks and the economic, ecological and social impact are taken into account in the assessment. The award ceremony took place as part of the GM Summer Summit '24 on 8 July 2024 in Munich. 

About Syntea 

Syntea is an AI-supported learning buddy developed by IU International University of Applied Sciences specifically for the needs of its students. It supports students individually in achieving their learning goals by adapting to their learning pace and rhythm, continuously tracking their learning progress and helping to identify and close knowledge gaps. 

Syntea offers four main functions: Firstly, Syntea identifies students' strengths and weaknesses. Secondly, students can get reliable answers to specialised questions about specific courses around the clock. Thirdly, students can prepare specifically for exams and receive personalised feedback directly. Finally, Syntea maintains an interactive dialogue with the student and constantly asks new questions, which continue until the subject matter is fully understood.

However, Syntea offers more than just AI capabilities: As a mixture of tutor and mentor, this personalised avatar adapts to the individual preferences of the learner. In the future, it will be possible to control Syntea by voice command.

Lena Sälzle , FRIDA project initiator and Public Affairs Officer at IU, accepted the award in person at the award ceremony on 4 July in Kronberg im Taunus: "Barbara Lutz highlighted some impressive initiatives at this year's Impact of Diversity Symposium. All of them deserved the award. It fills me with hope that the banquet hall was filled with people who stand for diversity, equity and inclusion and are committed to them every day - especially in these times, when democratic values are being called into question and our society faces major challenges. FRIDA and this award would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of everyone involved. The award has shown that we must continue. And we will."

The award honours the project's great efforts to ensure that educational pathways in the tech industry are no longer seen as the exception for schoolgirls, but instead represent real alternatives. 

More than 200 projects were submitted for the Impact of Diversity Award, which were initially put to a public vote. A 32-member jury from science and business fields, as well as associations and initiatives  then selected the winners in a total of 16 categories. 

In addition to the FRIDA project, the IU initiative "Culture of Everyone" also made it into the top 10 finalists of the Audience Award. An initiative that strengthens diversity, tolerance and openness within the university and in public.

This award recognises students on dual study programmes at IU who demonstrate their innovative spirit through courage and commitment. Be it through their innovative and creative projects or convincing theses, useful applications or impressive campaigns and initiatives that they have developed and implemented during their studies. Outstanding theses and projects that are particularly innovative, practice-oriented and at the cutting edge of current research findings are honoured. More than 40 entries from 13 different degree programmes were submitted for the IU Spirit Award 2024.

"LIFT Simulator" - A prototype for a physical and virtual lift model

IU Spirit Award winner 2024 (jury prize): Jonathan Siepmann

The jury prize for the IU Spirit Award goes to Jonathan Siepmann (Mechanical Engineering B.ENG.). The dual student from Dusseldorf was honoured for his pioneering "LIFT Simulator" project in collaboration with his practice partner TÜV Rheinland Industrie GmbH. 
 

With its LIFT simulator, Jonathan is setting new standards in the training and further education of lift maintenance specialists. The innovative lift model, which is based on the company's own headquarters, offers unique and practical training opportunities - both internally and for external companies. Career changers in particular benefit from this training opportunity. As there is no specific vocational training for this job, the LIFT simulator offers a unique opportunity to gain practical knowledge for day-to-day work and facilitate familiarisation. The project enables new employees to be trained in realistic situations on a model for handling lift systems. This allows them to get to know both the technical and organisational activities, which improves teamwork. Thanks to the use of the LIFT simulator in the home office, the project also contributes to sustainability and thus reduces carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, the LIFT simulator can be used at trade fairs or university events to attract potential new employees. Another important point is the use of the model for cyber security tests to protect lift systems in sensitive facilities such as hospitals from cyber-attacks. An innovative approach that skillfully implements current guidelines and standards and is forward-looking.

"We chose to honour Jonathan Siepmann's LIFT simulator because its unique combination of innovation and practical application is truly impressive and unprecedented in this field. It not only fulfils the clear need for training for specialist personnel, but also demonstrates future possibilities in mechanical engineering," says Prof. Dr. Peter Neumann, Chairman of the jury and Professor of Tourism Management at IU International University of Applied Sciences.

"I'm allowed to do that!" - A workshop: Everything children should know about their rights

IU Spirit Award winners 2024 (audience prize): Jasmin Saffari Esfahani and Elnara Valiyeva 

The winners of the audience prize at the IU Spirit Awards are graduates Jasmin Saffari Esfahani and Elnara Valiyeva from the Social Work B.A. programme. Their project "I’m allowed to do that!" addresses the ten most important rights of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and conveys these through an interactive workshop for fourth-grade pupils. The innovation of the project lies in its holistic approach, which not only conveys knowledge but also actively involves the target group in the design of the workshop. Creative methods such as guessing games, role-playing games and radio plays created by the students are combined with integrative and didactic techniques to promote a playful learning process. In line with the principles of empowerment, education and participation, the children learn how they can behave in a self-determined way, which democratic values are important and how they can stand up for their rights and successfully assert themselves.

An ideal cooperation partner was found thanks to outstanding collaboration and networking with Prof Dr Kemal Bozay, Professor of Social Work at IU and educational director of the organisation interKultur e.V. in Cologne. With the support of interKultur e.V., the project idea was successfully developed and implemented as a workshop. At the same time, IU graduates Jasmin and Elnara succeeded in asserting themselves with their project as part of the federal "Demokratie leben!" programme. As a result, they received support from the City of Cologne in the form of funding totalling around 5,000 euros. The workshop has already been implemented at six primary schools in Cologne and long-term cooperation is on the cards.

"What characterises this project by Jasmin and Elnara and obviously also convinced the audience is the creative and effective approach to communicating children's rights. They actively involve the pupils and manage to promote the learning process through playful methods. Such innovation and commitment to such a crucial area as children's rights education deserves our full recognition and support," said Prof. Dr. Regina Kostrzewa, jury member and Professor of Social Work at IU International University of Applied Sciences. 

About dual study programme at IU

The dual study programme at IU offers students the opportunity to gain practical experience in their regional company in addition to theoretical lectures and seminars. This model allows students to apply their acquired knowledge directly into practice, either in a weekly rotation or a split-week model. The theoretical part of the study programme can be completed in different ways: traditionally on-site at the campus, through online teaching or also independently of a location via our virtual campus. 

About the IU Spirit Award

The IU International University of Applied Sciences presented the IU Spirit Award for the first time in 2024 and plans to present it annually. The six-member jury currently consists of Prof Dr Peter Neumann (Professorship in Tourism Management), Prof Dr Julia Hilgers-Sekowsky (Professorship in Marketing Management), Prof Dr Regina Kostrzewa (Professorship in Social Work), Prof Dr Felix Wölfle (Professorship in Tourism Management), Prof Dr Nicola Zech (Vice Rector Campus Studies) and Alexander Krösser (Chief Marketing Officer at IU). Students on dual study programmes at IU have the opportunity to submit individual or group work - also across degree programmes and/or campuses - in recognition of particularly innovative, creative and practice-oriented work or projects. The audience award will be selected as part of an online pitch. Each finalist will be given the opportunity to present their project using the "Pecha Kucha" method, followed by an online vote by the audience. The IU Spirit Award is presented as an innovation prize in honour and memory of the former Vice-Rector Prof Dr Patrick Geus and is endowed with a prize of 500 euros each for the jury award and the audience award.

"I am so delighted that the students have awarded me this special honour. It motivates me even more to continue working on the topic and the target group. It's great to be able to help young people get to grips with the topic of artificial intelligence and therefore also computer science. Both are extremely important in our fast-paced everyday lives, as almost all areas of daily life now interact with AI solutions. Competitions and events like this help to break down inhibitions and barriers to new technologies so that people can master technology and not technology master people," says Prof Dr Knut Linke. 

For his award, the AI expert will receive an honorary prize of 500 euros for a science communication project for which he already has ideas: 

"I am currently planning a short publication suitable for children and young people on the subject of AI. In it, I will address the questions and ideas from the various rounds. The whole thing should be realised in the course of the year. The prize money will be used for the production and printing of the publication as well as for the distribution of specimen copies to the target group of I'm a Scientist. For example, the schools I know from the chats will also receive a souvenir copy."

IU International University of Applied Sciences, Germany's largest university with over 130,000 students, is the best distance learning university in 2024 according to the Fernstudium Direkt (FSD) ranking. Students from more than 100 education providers in Germany were able to rate the courses and distance learning courses offered by their education provider on the Fernstudium Direkt comparison portal (fernstudium-direkt.de) from 01 January to 31 December 2023. A total of 3,720 evaluations were recorded for academic providers during this period. With an FSD score of 5.4386, IU clearly stands out from the other academic distance learning universities and takes first place for the first time.

IU Alumni Award winner 2023: Stela Koleva 

The winner in the Professional Success category is Stela Koleva (M. A. General Management). The IU alumna from Prague has had a remarkable career within a very dynamic IT company and is now Vice President of a technology start-up:

Shortly after starting her management career as a supervisor at Concur - then still a start-up company that has since been acquired by SAP - she began her master's degree at IU. Within 5 years, she developed from the technical supervisor of a department with three employees to the strategic manager of a 300-strong team. She most recently served as both Vice President of SAP Concur Services and Support in the EMEA region for defining and implementing the EMEA support organisation, as well as Country Director for SAP Concur Czech for various branches in the Czech Republic with around 500 employees from up to 60 countries. Since May 2023, she has been Vice President Support and Services for Mews, a provider of technical hospitality systems. 

“With the award for Professional Success, we would like to honour Stela Koleva's steady career development within a growing IT company, especially with regard to our IU core aspects of flexibility and equality: She has managed to take on high management responsibility in a heavily male-dominated industry at an early stage, parallel to her distance learning programme”, the jury explained.

IU Alumni Award winner 2023: Bastian Mahmoodi 

The IU Alumni Award 2023 in the category "Entrepreneurship" goes to IU alumnus Bastian Mahmoodi 
(B. A. International Management). With his business idea, he helps skilled workers migrate to Germany and places valuable talent from non-EU countries with small and medium-sized companies:

Based on the specially developed concept "Guided Immigration Made in Germany", the recruitment company VISABEE, founded by Bastian Mahmoodi in 2018, helps international talent from the medical sector to immigrate and find a job in Germany. VISABEE initially enables small and medium-sized companies to advertise jobs in VISABEE's international partner network and carries out an initial evaluation of applicants. As soon as employees and employers reach an agreement, VISABEE takes care of everything up until the arrival at the workplace - from the organisation of language courses via the partner Berlitz, to support in administrative matters. Soon, VISABEE plans to become active in the area of mobility in addition to its current focus on healthcare and to launch immigration concepts for professional drivers. A platform for simplified access for corporate customers is also being developed.

“By realising his business idea, Bastian Mahmoodi is building bridges between small and medium-sized companies and talented people from outside the EU, thereby helping to reduce the shortage of skilled workers in a socially very important area”, said the jury, explaining its decision.

IU Alumni Award winner 2023: Hendrik Marx-Altkuckatz 

This year's Sustainability Alumni Award goes to Hendrik Marx-Altkuckatz (M. A. Business Administration). The IU graduate drives projects in an internationally active company with a focus on the agriculture, construction and energy sectors that serve the goal of accelerating the decarbonisation of the group:

As part of BayWa's climate strategy, which is in his area of responsibility, he set up a system called "Internal Carbon Price" (ICO) together with the CFO, Controlling and other internal stakeholders, in which greenhouse gas emissions are priced internally. This calculated budget is used on an annual basis exclusively to finance measures that have a positive contribution to emissions, such as the switch to electric cars and more climate-friendly heating systems, various efficiency improvements to technical equipment, etcetera. The ICO is also used to calculate the carbon price. The special thing about this is that unlike other companies or the so-called "shadow price", they assign a direct monetary value to their emissions and reinvest them for a specific purpose. In this way, it has established a governance system that enables targeted investments throughout the Group and on the other hand, can ensure the fulfilment of the climate strategy. In addition, he is building up the business innovation "BayWa Carbon Services" as its head, which offers advice on implementing climate strategies and works with cooperation partners such as Siemens AG / SiGreen, CAS AG / Sust:ain Data, Vista GmbH and RSS - Remote Sensing Solutions GmbH.

this award goes to Marcus Courvoisier (B. A. Social Work), who took over the management of a youth centre immediately after completing his dual studies at a young age. After working as the Hamburg site manager of the daycare centre provider KMK kinderzimmer, he is currently in a management position as site manager at the Rudolf Ballin Foundation.

IU Alumni Award distinction for Sven Steinert

For the first time, IU is presenting the Special Mention AI award for special projects in the field of artificial intelligence that aim to have a particular impact on our society: 

This award goes to IU graduate Sven Steinert (B. A. International Management), who, as Managing Director of his platform SUSTAINX, combines AI-based technology with collective intelligence from science and business in order to translate their sustainability ambitions into concrete measures. SUSTAINX is a sustainability platform and community with over 4,000 members that provides access to over 2,500 best practices and solutions, facilitates cross-functional collaboration in companies and enables cross-industry networking with sustainability thought leaders. The AI-based community solution offers members the possibility of structured knowledge transfer to find specific topics and suitable offers for solutions, to develop solutions together with other members and to discuss them - moderated by a specialist group for sustainability and consultants. 

"With his SUSTAINX platform, Sven Steinert is making an important contribution to promoting the networking of sustainability strategists and thus also the sustainable transformation in companies and institutions with the help of AI technology", said the jury.

Award ceremony in early 2024 

The Alumni Awards will be presented at the next virtual alumni event in the first quarter of 2024. As a prize, the award winners can choose a further training course from the wide range of courses offered by the IU Academy with a duration of up to four months full-time or eight months part-time.

IU International University of Applied Sciences (IU) achieves top scores in latest rankings by the Centre for Higher Education (CHE) – publisher of Germany's largest university rankings. With CHE’s new 5-star rating system, IU ranked in the top group on nearly all categories for the study subjects: business studies, business informatics and social work. In particular, IU outperformed all other German universities with a nearly perfect overall score of 4,9 out of 5 stars in business informatics. In the study subjects business studies and social work, IU achieved an overall score of 4,4 and 4,0 out of 5 stars respectively – performing above the university average in all three rankings. 

Prof. Dr. Holger Sommerfeldt, Rector at IU, said: 

"An absolutely great result for IU. The latest CHE Rankings are a significant achievement for IU and confirm our footing as a leader in education. The large practical components and close supervision of our students are essential core elements of our philosophy. We are happy to see that our students agree and rated us so well.” 

The CHE Rankings assess universities on a 5-star rating system. Universities receiving four or more stars are rated in the “top group”, 3,5 to 2,5 stars are in the “middle group”, and those receiving 2 stars or less are in the “bottom group”. The ratings are rounded up to the nearest half star, and are awarded across several broad categories, such as: “range of courses”, “organisation of studies”, “support during studies”, “organisation of examinations” and more. New this year is the category: “digital learning elements”. Here, IU reached the top group in all three study subjects: business informatics (4,9/ 5 stars); business studies (4,4/ 5 stars); and social work (4,0/ 5 stars). “Our flexible online approach is what makes our study programmes so appealing to students. Our students have the option to study at their own pace which is particularly appealing to the modern-day student,” added Sommerfeldt.

The internationally renowned ranking assesses online MBA programmes across four general areas: faculty and teaching, class profile, class experience and employer reputation. In this ranking, IU performed particularly well in both class experience and class profile, receiving top scores in the respective categories. Erfurt, 22 February 2023. For the third time in a row, Great Place to Work certified IU International University of Applied Sciences (IU) as an attractive employer. The certification is based, on the one hand, on an anonymous, independently conducted survey of IU employees and, on the other hand, on an audit of HR programmes and measures. Some of IU's results were significantly above the average of all other participating companies. 

Great Place to Work = Great Place to Grow 

IU has grown from 2,000 to 3,500 employees in the past two years. "With 100,000 students now, we are the largest university in Germany and are shaping the education of tomorrow. However, we are not only growing as a company, but we are enabling every employee to grow with us - professionally and personally - thus transferring our vision of providing access to education for all and developing through it to our employees as well," says Tim Kaltenborn, Director People Organisation & Culture at IU International University of Applied Sciences. 

IU strives to create a working environment in which everyone can realise their personal potential and develop based on their individual skills. TÜV SÜD certified: IU is climate neutral 

In 2020, IU became one of the world's first climate-neutral distance learning universities. TÜV SÜD now reconfirms the climate neutrality of IU International University of Applied Sciences. The certification is for the third year in a row. The conditions for certification include an inventory of actual and expected emissions, proof of ambitious measures to gradually reduce avoidable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the promotion of recognised climate protection projects to offset unavoidable emissions.

Despite rapidly growing student numbers, IU reduced its total direct and indirect emissions in 2021 by 31 percent compared to the previous year. In addition, the university was able to reduce its specific GHG emissions per student by 24 percent. The carbon footprint was calculated by the Institute for Energy, Ecology and Economics (DFGE) based on the international Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

The majority of students at IU learn in a distance learning model thanks to innovative digital learning formats. This can significantly reduce CO2 emissions that would be caused by commuting, for example. According to research, teaching a distance learning student at IU generates significantly less greenhouse gases than teaching a regular campus student.

Moreover, energy officers are deployed at all IU locations in Germany, which are currently more than 30. They check the individual circumstances as well as the consumption on site and establish resource-saving measures. In addition, IU offsets its carbon footprint in cooperation with ClimatePartner Deutschland GmbH by supporting certified climate projects. These include the expansion of wind energy in Brazil, the generation of hydropower in Laos and access to clean water in Mozambique. 
 

Creating sustainability through education - for all 

Apart from reducing CO2, IU places particular emphasis on education when it comes to sustainability. Education enables people to develop and live sustainably. In addition to individual learning modules, IU offers entire degree programmes such as Sustainable Management, which equip today's students with knowledge and methods for a viable future. 

To provide access to education for more and more people worldwide, IU initiates important alliances. The Study Access Alliance, for example, provides 100,000 scholarships in Africa. As a member of the UNESCO Global Education Coalition, students in need in crisis situations receive crucial educational support at IU. Numerous scholarship models (e.g., for people from poorer countries, single parents and people with disabilities), fair admission requirements and inclusion-friendly study formats open up individual further education opportunities for additional target groups - and thus the basis for a self-determined, sustainable life.
