For good scientific practice: Ethics committee & ombudsperson

Two pillars of research quality at the IU

Ethics Committee

The IU International University of Applied Science Ethics Committee is appointed by the Senate and has the task of assessing research projects touching on ethical issues and issuing opinions on them. The committee examines and gives an advisory opinion on fundamental ethical questions in the field of science, in particular on projects involving research on human beings, which are carried out at IU International University of Applied Science or are supervised from within the university. It determines whether such research projects give rise to concerns from an ethical, scientific or legal point of view.

Due to the quarterly meeting dates of the Ethics Committee, it is advisable to submit an application well in advance of the start of the project.

The official meeting dates of the Ethics Committee for the year 2022 and 2023 are as follows:

  • 3rd quarter 2022: 28.9.2022

  • 4th quarter 2022: 7.12.2022

  • 1st quarter 2023: 8.3.2023

  • 2nd quarter 2023:10.5.2023

  • 3rd quarter 2023: 13.9.2023

  • 4th quarter 2023: 29.11.2023

Applications can be submitted to the Ethics Committee via email up to four weeks before the meeting date. The corresponding application forms will be made available on this website shortly, until then they can be requested from the Ethics Committee.

Members of the ethics committee

The Ethics Committee consists of four permanent members. In concrete cases of decision-making in teaching and research, one expert (as a guest) from among the professors is called in each time, so that decisions can be made on the basis of these five people.

The Committee work is based on the Committee's Statutes, which were adopted by the Senate of IU International University of Applied Science in January 2021 and are available here in PDF format.

Ombudsperson for ensuring good academic practice and dealing with academic misconduct

Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Labor

The Ombudsperson for Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice and for Dealing with Scientific Misconduct is appointed from the group of professors by the university management for a period of 4 years and elected by the Senate. National and international research experience should be a prerequisite.

The ombudsperson is the contact person for all members of the university and advises on questions of good scientific practice and scientific misconduct. The ombudsperson is a person of trust for members of the university who wish to report suspected scientific misconduct or feel exposed to suspicions of scientific misconduct. Reports of scientific misconduct must be made in writing.
