Bachelor of Arts SOCIAL WORK (B.A.)

You would like to support people in crisis situations, for example in debt counselling or addiction counselling, help refugees to find their way around when they first arrive in Germany? Do you want to look after people with disabilities or organise leisure activities for young people and introduce them to new perspectives? The profession of social worker is very diverse and multidimensional. At the same time, it is important to always keep both human and economic aspects in mind. Our Bachelor's degree programme in Social Work (B.A.) prepares you for this by teaching you not only the technical and methodological skills of social work, but also the basics of business administration. After graduation, you will be able to take on tasks as a specialist and later as a manager within social institutions, social enterprises or social administration.

Students of the part-time degree programme in Social Work are awarded the title of State-recognised Social Worker or State-recognised Social Pedagogue if they successfully complete the Social Work Practice Project (internship).

In the Social Work Bachelor's degree programme, we will provide you with specialist knowledge from the area of social work and combine this with basic knowledge of business administration.

The bachelor's degree programme in Social Work is modular, which means that you study based on subject areas that are divided into so-called “modules”. Within these modules, there is sometimes an introductory course and an in-depth course that systematically prepare you for the completion of the module. You will receive ECTS points (European Credit Transfer System) for each successful completion, which document your achievements. These ECTS points are internationally comparable and of course, recognised.

Please note: due to the fact that the study programmes offered on this website are in German, all of the information material and communications will be in the German language, and not in English.

In order to receive the certificate as a state-recognised social worker and social pedagogue in addition to the Bachelor of Arts degree, you must complete a 100-day practical project. The prerequisite is that you have completed at least 120 ECTS and the modules “Introduction to Social Work (DLBSAESA)” and “Methods and Tools of Social Work (DLBSAMISA)”. You can complete your practical project in all institutions, such as work with foreigners, family education or youth work, or in your current workplace, if the tasks of professional social work are carried out there by state-recognised professionals. Please note that the institution must be approved by the IU University of Applied Sciences beforehand.

Here you can find all the questions and answers about your practice project in the social work study programme.

Votes for Part-Time studies

“I am already benefiting from a lot of the syllabus content, which I can integrate into my current professional life. Especially, the module “Methods and Tools of Social Work” has already given me a lot of methodological variety in dealing with parents during consultation hours!“
