IU STARTS TEACHING OPERATIONS
In 2000, IU (then IUBH) began teaching in Bad Honnef as the first university in Germany to offer digital
as well as analogue learning. In 2016, it was the first university in the world to introduce online
exams in distance learning and quickly became the largest university in Germany.
GERMAN STUDY LOCATIONS
In addition to its headquarters in Erfurt, IU has a campus in almost every major German city. With its
on-site locations and its virtual campus offers, it gives prospective students worldwide access to their ideal
study model - whether dual, distance or hybrid via myStudies.
More educational equality and fewer barriers to entry - that is what IU is committed to. With over
130,000 students, it opens up an academic career to more people than any other university in Germany.
More than 70 percent come from non-academic households, and 16 percent study without A-Level.
IU stands for top-level education - state-recognised, accredited & multi-awarded. Students can
choose from a wide range of Bachelor's, Master's and MBA programmes in German and English that prepare
them for the jobs of tomorrow - from IT, sustainability and cyber security to health and social affairs.
A large, diverse and ever-growing IU team is there to support its students every day - whether in
teaching, personal counselling or "behind the scenes". An optimal mix of online learning and
face-to-face interaction ensures the best possible learning and education experience.
DIGITAL LEARNING TOOLS
Thanks to digitally supported learning formats, IU continuously sets new standards for personalised
learning, making it Europe's largest EdTech provider. Students have access to thousands of scripts,
videos and courses in the award-winning IU Learn app and optimise their learning through AI-powered
innovations like the AI learning buddy Syntea.
CORPORATE PARTNERS IN DUAL STUDIES
IU supports over 15,000 companies and institutions in recruiting junior staff. This unique network
offers students enormous career and growth opportunities for study and work. Partners include Motel One,
VW Financial Services, Decathlon, AWO and Deutsche Bahn.
OUTSTANDING ADVISORY BOARD Members
Rethinking education - this is the motto of the IU Advisory Board constituted in 2022. Together with Dr
Frank Weise, Prof. Dr Tobias Bonhoeffer, Kamissa Camara, Karina Montilla Edmonds, Raffaela Rein, Lucy
Stonehill, Jimmy Wales and Sascha Lobo, the IU is continuously creating new ways to provide access to education for
more and more people worldwide.
To help more and more people around the world achieve personal growth through education, IU initiates
important alliances. The Study Access Alliance, for example, provides 100,000 scholarships in Africa,
while the Study Abroad Alliance enables IU students to graduate from a partner university in North
America, Europe or Australia.
