BIM, AI and the future of construction: New lecture series at IU Campus Hannover

In the winter semester of 2026/2027, IU invites to nine evenings with experts from the field

Summary

In the winter semester 2026/2027, Prof. Dr Saman Jung-Lundberg and Prof. Dr Gregor Zimmermann invite to nine evenings with experts from the field - open to students, practice partners and external interested parties.

Hanover, 4 November 2026. How are digitalisation and artificial intelligence changing planning and construction? The free lecture series "BIM / AI / Digitalisation – Construction" at IU Campus Hannover explores this question in the winter semester of 2026/2027. Since its launch on 6 October 2026, guests from planning, consulting, research, and construction have presented their projects, experiences, and technologies, each with practical examples.

Education for all, with a practical focus

This series underscores IU's commitment to making education accessible and practical for everyone. It is aimed not only at students, but also at companies and professionals. Anyone interested in BIM (Building Information Modeling) and AI in construction can participate in discussions, ask questions, and network. The guest speakers bring current practical knowledge directly into the lecture hall, where students and other interested parties can directly apply it to their studies or jobs.

Nine evenings, one common thread

The series comprises six main sessions on the first Tuesday of each month and three additional sessions on the third Tuesday from January to March 2027. Each session begins at 5 pm. The main topics are:

  • BIM management at Deutsche Bahn and the current status of BIM implementation in transport infrastructure planning
  • BIM and AI in public construction, for example in PPP projects and public procurement
  • AI in construction and materials technology, from research to application
  • Case studies on infrastructure projects and digital twins for bridges

Lecture, discussion, exchange

Each evening follows the same format: a guest lecture of approximately 45 minutes, a Q&A session, and a moderated panel discussion. Industry partners from the audience are also welcome to participate in the discussion. The subsequent get-together provides an opportunity for students, companies, and guests to network.

The contributions of the guest speakers will be published as scholarly articles in an anthology by Springer. Publication is planned for autumn 2027.

ABOUT IU INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES

With over 120,000 students, IU International University of Applied Sciences (IU) is the largest university in Germany. The private, state-recognised educational institution, based in Erfurt, began teaching in 2000 and now has 24 campuses as well as a virtual campus. IU stands for maximum flexibility in study: whether through dual study, distance learning or on campus – students from over 160 nations tailor their educational path to suit their individual circumstances. With more than 200 degree programmes at bachelor’s, master’s and MBA level, IU imparts practical skills. Innovative learning concepts foster targeted, future-proof skills for an increasingly AI-driven world of work. A modern, digitally supported learning environment and the use of artificial intelligence enable effective, personalised learning. As a pioneer in this field, IU has developed its own digital learning companion, ‘Syntea’, which has been in use since 2023. A network of over 15,000 companies – including Motel One, Vodafone, AWO and Deutsche Bahn – makes IU a strong partner in the training of skilled workers and consistently links academic teaching with practical experience.
