Dr. Neil Arvin Bretaña is a Professor of Data Management at IU. He is an award-winning innovator with over a decade of experience on work in the field of health-related data across 4 countries. He has authored over 25 scientific publications and presented at over 15 international conferences. Aside from his academic expertise, he has significant data science and business consulting experience from private companies and Forbes 500 organisations. He has co-founded 2 health start-ups and actively contributes as a non-executive board member for non-for-profit organisations in the public health space.
Dr. Bretaña holds a PhD in Applied Computer Science from UNSW Sydney, a masters degree in bioinformatics from Yuan Ze University, and a post-graduate certificate in Biomedical Design and Innovation from Copenhagen University.

The biodesign process of innovation is a well-documented multi-disciplinary approach used to identify unmet healthcare needs and produce sustainable solutions fit for society. In this study, we report the application of the needs-finding step in action at a public hospital in regional Denmark over a 2-month period. A total of 57 observations were recorded, resulting to the identification of 109 needs in this setting.

This is a modelling study using an individual-based mathematical model of a typical prison setting. The model was calibrated against Australian epidemiological data sets and executed in-prison events for each individual daily, including movements between prisons, changes in risk behaviour and uptake of prevention measures such as OST and NSP, as well as DAA treatment. Scenarios were projected from 2018 to 2030.
Forecasting pharmaceutical stock inventory is a complex problem affecting the healthcare industry across the globe. In this study, we utilised industry-supplied time-series data to train prediction models using linear regression, exponential smoothing, Holt Winters Seasonal Additive, and Holt Winters Seasonal Additive + damped algorithms. Among these models, the study identified the Holt Winters Seasonal Additive + damped algorithm is the best performing based on an RMSE of 408.
