The departments
Subject affiliation and collegial network
By decision of the rectorate, the university forms departments which are headed by a head of department. All professors and academic staff who are relevant to the subject belong to the departments. A professor is elected by all members of the respective department every two years to head the department. The departments give the professors of the IU International University of Applied Science a professional home and promote the internal exchange of teaching and research.
The departments
Currently there are the following nine departments and one special department:
The Department of Design, Architecture & Construction is the youngest department at the International University of Applied Sciences and the fastest growing. The number of professors belonging to the department has grown to over 70 in a short time. This diverse department is home to the professorships for (interior) architecture and civil engineering as well as for construction project management and real estate management and finally the design professorships, such as communication design, interaction design and the large group of media designers. The research culture in this field is characterised less by publications than by participation in competitions and tenders.
Head of Department: Prof. Dr Oliver Kussinger

With around 20 professors, the Department of Health is one of the smaller departments at IU. It includes denominations in the fields of health management, health care and nursing as well as nutritional sciences and various therapeutic sciences (such as speech therapy or physiotherapy). A major research focus is on the fields of nutritional sciences, therapeutic sciences, health management and health economics and the broad field of nursing and gerontology. Further topics are questions of medical education, physiotherapy and questions of design and resource allocation in health systems.
Head of Department: Prof. Dr. Patrick Fehling

The field of IT & Technology is a rapidly growing subject area. In addition to topics of digitalisation in education, the handling of big data and artificial intelligence as well as the increasingly important field of cyber security and data protection and research questions in the field of optics and laser technology are current research topics of the department. Various conference participations in European and non-European countries show that the expertise of the professors in this field also carries international weight.
Head of Department: Prof. Dr. Moustafa Nawito

The Human Resources Department is an agile and productive field in which interesting personalities with a broad wealth of experience and deep specialisations are involved in teaching (distance learning and dual study) as well as in research. The focus of the professors with practical experience lies in the personnel-specific areas of human resource management, human resource development, leadership, digital HR as well as in personnel-related topics such as business education, international management, organisation, coaching and supervision. In each case, the focus is on discovering and unleashing the performance potential in organisations through the successful design of HR tools, HR and organisational development as well as individual and organisational change processes. Current developments at the cutting edge of human resources management such as digitalisation, virtual reality and agilisation are also included here.
Human resources stands out as a small subject area compared to others due to its disproportionately high publication activity. This is also an expression of the strong practical orientation of the professors. With its broad thematic orientation, the HR department is also profitably interdisciplinary in its linking of theory and practice in joint research projects. The IU research projects "Motivation Compass Healthcare" and "Smart Data Analytics" are examples of this.
The professors in the field of Human Resources also meet regularly for a lively and stimulating professional exchange, in which they work on further promising ideas for cooperation, joint research and publication activities and various exciting projects.
Head of Department: Prof. Dr. Maja Störmer

The Department of Hospitality, Tourism & Event is the oldest department at IU and the degree programmes are part of the IU core study programme. The number of professors is correspondingly stable. The department includes professors with denominations such as Tourism Management, Hotel or Culinary Management and Hospitality and Event Management. The professors at the IU have expert status in many areas, which is reflected in an enormously high level of media representation. A very strong guiding theme in the research activities are the two large complex areas of digitalisation and transformation to more sustainability in the event industry, tourism industry and hospitality.
Head of Department: Prof. Dr. Peter Neumann
The department of management is a very diverse field. It emerged from the former department of Transport & Logistics and the management-related denominations of the former department of Economics & Management. It thus includes all denominations from the field of logistics and aviation management as well as law and agricultural management, but also smaller subjects such as sports, fashion or service management. Furthermore, this field includes newer subjects such as sustainable management, sustainable entrepreneurship or public management.
Head of Department: Prof. Dr. Esin Bozyazi

The Department of Marketing & Communication is home to professors specialising in marketing management, social media and digital and online marketing. There are also professorships for Media & PR and for Fashion and Retail Marketing. Research in the department is practice-oriented and to a large extent geared to university didactic topics of practice-oriented teaching and quality assurance in distance learning. The department is very successful in the competition for the IU Compass - currently three IU Compass projects are being funded.
Head of Department: Prof. Lars-Peter Linke
The Department of Social Sciences has more than 100 professors. The primary denomination is social work. However, professors with the denominations of education (early childhood education, adult education; cultural and media education, etc.), psychology (from business psychology to clinical psychology), special education/inclusion and social management also belong to this field. Accordingly, the publications cover a wide range of fields. Research focuses on racism and extremism research, including externally funded projects, as well as research into the transfer of cultural education to practice or working conditions in social work.
Head of Department: Prof. Dr. Stephan de la Rosa
The department of economics includes denominations such as (General) Business Administration and Economics, Finance & Accounting, and Quantitative Methods and Statistics. The research topics are correspondingly diverse and range from business and tax law topics to finance and controlling to questions of methodology and statistics.
Head of Department: Prof. Dr. Kirsten Jäger

Two professors and three academic staff members or teachers for special tasks are currently assigned to the Special Department Languages and Services. They are primarily responsible for the languages and pathways offered at the Bad Honnef location. Furthermore, research-active staff members work in the Research Department and deal with questions in the area of science management.

The department heads
The heads of department represent the department and are significantly involved in programme development and appointments. Together with the pro-rector for research and transfer, they coordinate the research activities in the department. The conference of the department heads reports once a year to the Senate on the development of their departments with regard to the current status of research and appointments.
The heads of department meet at least twice a year. This meetings are chaired by the Rector. The conference of the department heads makes recommendations to the Rectorate regarding subject matters and research.

The professors and lecturers
The quality of both academic education and research depends to a large extent on our professors and lecturers. We therefore place the highest demands on them. These standards are based on their academic reputation and outstanding subject-specific knowledge as well as on their sound practical experience and international orientation. Here you can find out who holds which professorship and is assigned to which subject area, which research interests your teachers are dedicated to or who is responsible for university development.
