The Digital Learning Space is a central location on the intranet where everything comes together: resources, tutorials, opportunities for social and academic exchange and community – a space for learning, discovering and growing. We also support our professors and researchers with research-related services. These include, in particular, publication advice, support with open access issues, and the development and maintenance of scientific information resources. In this way, we contribute to making research at IU International University of Applied Sciences visible, accessible and future-oriented.

Our Digital Learning Space (DLS) is an interactive learning platform. In this ‘digital third place’, we offer a space that combines informal and structured learning, social exchange, and active participation in the learning process. Here, our students can expand their digital and scientific skills, from literature research to the reflective use of AI tools.
In the DLS, we promote collaborative learning, peer support and the exchange of knowledge in a barrier-free environment. We offer regular live training courses on various topics ranging from basic through advanced skill levels. Through interactive workshops, self-study formats and open communication spaces, we create versatile learning opportunities that are individually tailored to the needs and learning styles of our students. This creates a vibrant learning community that supports our students both academically and socially.
The DSL provides a forward-looking approach in digital higher education. With it, we accompany our students on their journey of actively and successfully shaping their studies.

The Library and Information Services support researchers at IU International University of Applied Sciences throughout the entire publication process. We work closely with the various departments to continuously adapt our services to the needs of our researchers.
We provide researchers with information, advice and events on open access and other publication-related topics. We assist in the search for a suitable journal or publisher and, under certain conditions, cover the open access publication fees.
Scientists at IU International University of Applied Sciences can publish their research results in the IU Docs repository, which is maintained by the Library and Information Services Team. IU International University of Applied Sciences makes these publications freely available to the public, thereby supporting the open access transformation.
IU International University of Applied Sciences is committed to the principles of open science. Open access publishing is an important part of this.
In order to promote the transition to open access, IU International University of Applied Sciences participates in various open access agreements with renowned scientific publishers. These agreements not only include read access to the respective journal portfolio, but also the option of open access publishing in these journals.
We concluded open access agreements with the following publishers:
„DEAL“-Agreement with Springer Nature, Wiley and Elsevier
Hogrefe (PsyJournals)
ACM
Emerald
PLOS
To support the open access landscape in all subject areas and for all publication types at IU International University of Applied Sciences, we also participate in consortia for the financing of open access journals and books.
Currently, these are:
Open Access Consortium SocioHub Journals (2026-2028) (formerly KOALA Consortium Social Sciences, 2023-2025) – APC-free open access publications through funding of four journals: sub\urban, Gender, Open Gender Journal, Forum Qualitative Social Research
Open Access Consortium of the "Specialised Information Service Education" – funding for the publication of 19 book titles in immediate open access between autumn 2024 and summer 2025 and 20 titles between 2025 and 2026
Open Library Media Studies from the publisher transcript (2025-2027) – funding for the publication of 10 book titles per year in immediate open access
Agreement on the open access transformation of books: New publications in education sciences from the publisher Barbara Budrich (2026) – funding for the publication of eight book titles in immediate open access
In addition, we funded the first two issues of Radix, an open access journal newly founded in 2025 by members of the Centre for Radicalisation Research and Prevention (Zentrum für Radikalisierungsforschung und Prävention, ZRP) at IU International University of Applied Sciences.
The Library and Information Services provide individual support to researchers throughout the entire publication process. For example, we provide support in finding a suitable (open access) journal or publisher, or in checking the credibility of a journal or conference. We offer information, advice, and events on open access and other publication-related topics. All researchers at IU International University of Applied Sciences are welcome to contact us with any questions they may have about publishing.
Researchers at IU International University of Applied Sciences can upload their open access publications and secondary publications of closed access publications to the IU Docs repository. The IU Discussion Papers series are also published in IU Docs. As IU International University of Applied Sciences' main publication, the IU Discussion Papers provide our professors with the opportunity to share current research results or discuss theses across diverse subject areas.
Students whose theses meet the required criteria can publish them within a password-protected area of IU Docs. The theses are then available to other members of IU International University of Applied Sciences.
We actively shape knowledge: learn more about where we present our work at specialist conferences and publish in trade journals – and how we use our expertise to drive forward the development of teaching, research and library work.
