With the FirstGen funding program, IU supports prospective students who are the first in their family to start a university degree. All bachelor’s and master’s programmes in the distance learning programme at IU are eligible for funding.

The funding is granted regardless of:
the study programme
the distance learning study model
Eligible for funding are applicants who:
secure a place in a distance learning programme within the application period,
complete the FirstGen funding application form in full,
and explain their FirstGen status and personal motivation in an essay.
Students at other universities, as well as those enrolled in dual studies or further education programmes at IU, are not eligible for funding.

Apply for the FirstGen Funding program using our application form and submit a short essay about your motivation to study.
It pays to be quick: The funding is only available in limited numbers, as funding is provided exclusively for this application window.
Once your documents have been reviewed, we’ll let you know the outcome.
If you’re successful, your funding will be applied to your tuition fees.
Complete your online application for your degree programme and use your funding voucher code.
Important: Want to secure your study place straight away? Talk to our student advisory team about the FirstGen Funding program.
Selection is based on:
your brief statement (maximum half a page essay) describing your FirstGen status and motivation for the distance learning programme,
availability of scholarship places.
Grades or previous academic performance are not the main focus.
*Selection criteria may vary depending on the application round.
Do you need help with your decision? Your personal study advisor is happy to help you!
Note: Are you already in touch with our student advisory team or want to secure a place with the FirstGen Funding program right away? Simply ask our student advisory team about the FirstGen funding.
You will need the following documents for your application: a brief statement explaining your motivation with FirstGen status.
The FirstGen funding is valid exclusively for programmes in the distance learning programme at IU.
Applications are only possible for a limited time. First, secure your funding using the application form. There, you simply submit a short essay about your motivation to study. Fundings are awarded only while places are available.
Note: If you are awarded the funding, you must sign your study contract within six weeks – otherwise your scholarship will expire. Your starting date can be set further in the future.
The funding covers €3,000 toward your tuition fees.
No cash payout will be made. There is no legal entitlement to the funding. The funding cannot be combined with other discount offers or promotions.
No, applying for and receiving the funding is only possible before you secure your study place. We therefore recommend applying for the funding early. You are also welcome to contact our Student Advisory Service for guidance.
Please note that the funding or scholarship bonus can only be redeemed in connection with a newly signed study contract. It cannot be applied to existing contracts, retroactively settled, or redeemed after the fact using a discount code.
Receiving a funding or scholarship does not automatically guarantee admission to your studies and does not create any entitlement to enrolment. The final decision regarding your admission will be made as part of the regular enrolment process.
By submitting your application, you confirm that you are aware of these conditions and agree to them.
