Frequently asked question
Good news: At IU, we do not require a numerus clausus (NC). You won't have to go through an arduous selection process or have waiting semesters credited to you, because none of our degree programmes have an NC. We prefer to talk to you personally and find out together where your talents and strengths lie and, above all, what goals you are pursuing with your studies.
You can study at our virtual campus from anywhere in the world. In addition, our university has over 28 different locations in cities throughout Germany. Click here to find an IU campus near you.
Yes, this is possible at IU. In addition to the entrance qualification in the form of an Abitur or Fachabitur, interested students without an Abitur also have the opportunity to enter our programmes. For example, you can study without a high school diploma if you are a state-certified technician/business economist, have a master craftsman's diploma or have completed at least two years of vocational training and have at least three years of related work experience.
Studies at IU take 24, 36, 48 or 72 months, depending on which time model and degree you choose. If you need more time and semesters for your studies, it will not be a problem.
Studying at IU, you will benefit from innovative teaching concepts and learning tools such as the online campus, digital scripts, learning videos, interactive quizzes, the free app IU Learn and online exams. In our interactive online events, you will be able to deepen your knowledge live under the guidance of experienced lecturers and then directly clarify open questions or interact with the rest of the course. These events take place in the evening so that they are compatible with your professional life.
You can also organise everything related to your studies on our online campus: course registration, exam booking, grade overview... As a learning platform, myCampus also offers you your online library, versatile learning tools and various opportunities to network with students or teachers.
Absolutely. To take a break from your studies, we offer you the option of a semester off in the myStudies and distance learning study models. During this time, your studies will be suspended and you will have no access to the online campus or your learning materials. However, we will not charge any fees during your leave of absence.
A leave of absence is possible from the second semester onwards. In total, the leave of absence may not exceed half of the standard period of study of your degree programme (e.g. for a six-semester Bachelor's programme, a maximum of three semesters of leave).
WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY
While I was still studying, I had the idea of founding a specialised tour operator for trips to Africa. In order to realise this, I decided to take my luck into my own hands and found Go'n joy africa.
At that time, I was already studying for a Master's degree in General Management at IU. A big advantage for me was that I was able to work on the marketing and tourism management modules at the same time as I was setting up the company, so I was able to apply my knowledge directly in these areas. I also benefited a lot from the monthly exam dates because it meant I had less time pressure. Thanks to the online study material, I learned a lot on the go and did not have to attend any in-person events. The IU distance learning programme was perfectly integrated into my everyday work life.
The end of my training as a travel agent was also a starting signal for me - I quickly realised that I still wanted to study. So, while working at a DER travel agency in Schweinfurt, I completed my business administration degree and qualified for studying at university. A distance learning programme was ideal for me because I really wanted to keep working. The programme at IU gave me the flexibility I needed. During my studies, this became even more important as I was promoted to office manager of my travel agency and had to balance a responsible job - often a 6-day week - plus studies, a partner, a family and friends
After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration in 2014, I went straight into the professional world as an HR consultant. However, it was clear to me that I wanted to complete a Master's degree while working, so I needed a study programme that was completely independent of time and place, and so I chose IU - I couldn't find that much flexibility anywhere else. I decided to study a Master's degree in General Management. I had already built up a lot of prior knowledge through my business studies at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, but I learned a lot of new and interesting things in the Master's programme, especially through the specialisations.
