Your admission to the dual study programme

As an applicant with a general university entrance qualification (Abitur) or a subject-related university entrance qualification (Fachgebundenes Abitur), you can be admitted directly to the dual Bachelor's program at the IU.

If you have graduated from a Waldorf school or a vocational college in Baden-Württemberg, a competent authority must confirm your entrance qualification for higher education so that you can study in another federal state. This also applies if you want to study in a state other than Thuringia. Additional services may be required for this. Your student advisor will answer all your questions.

If you apply with an international highschool certificate or a highschool certificate obtained abroad, we will carry out an equivalence test (according to Anabin).

It is also crucial for your application that you can prove that you have German language skills in accordance with language level B2. In addition, you will have an IU counseling interview with your personal study advisor.

It is possible to start without a (technical) high school diploma if you have the following experience:

• completed vocational training of at least two years*

• at least three years of professional experience** in your learned profession

Your professional qualifications (training + work experience) must match your intended course of study. You will first start a "trial study" at the IU.

*Did you complete your professional training and work experience within Europe, but outside Germany? Then we will carry out an equivalence test. We will accept training within the EU as equivalent if it is comparable to German vocational training at the DQR 4 level.

**Your work experience must have been full-time. Full-time is defined as having worked more than 32 hours per week. Part-time employment will be calculated on a pro-rata basis according to the amount of time worked.

You can start at the IU with a completed advanced training as a state-certified technician or state-certified business economist.

If you have successfully completed a master craftsman's examination, you can start a dual study programme at IU.

In the Media Design and Architecture degree programmes, in addition to your university entrance qualification in accordance with § 68 (2) ThürHG, we also have to check whether this design degree programme is something for you in principle. We will also be happy to advise you on this and give you helpful tips on how you can demonstrate your aptitude for design during your further application process.

Please note that your degree programme is only eligible for BAföG funding once you have passed the entrance examination!
