Tourism managers professionally offer products and services along the phases of a trip – planning and preparation, travel and stay, feedback, and implications for the future. After your degree, you might work as a(n)...

Product management is the core of the travel arrangement sector. Based on a precise analysis of the market, demand trends, and competition, product managers design a promising product from travel services. Purchasing and pricing play a central role in this. In close collaboration with sales, content, volumes, supply contracts, and quality assurance are managed holistically. This requires good project management skills, a knack for numbers, familiarity with relevant IT tools, and a holistic view.
The development of tourism in the tourist target areas today is exclusively carried out by specially established Destination Management Organisations (DMOs). They pursue the strategic development of the destination from the perspective of maximising positive tourism effects and minimising negative effects for resident businesses, the local population, and the environment. Based on development concepts, measures are defined, and funding for their implementation is acquired. Destination managers must consider numerous interests and establish consensus among different objectives. Along with strong project management skills, destination managers should be able to respond flexibly to rapidly changing conditions. Often there are close interfaces with the economic development of a destination.
Online travel portals and Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) have been steadily increasing their share in the tourism industry's distribution mix for years. Like brick-and-mortar distribution (travel agencies), they sell travel services (individually or as a package) to end customers for a commission. In addition to this classic business model, OTAs generate income through interface fees in computer reservation systems from partner companies in upstream and downstream sectors (e.g., car rentals, travel insurance). This often results in hybrid business models (travel operators and travel distribution). Besides solid tourism expertise, online travel distribution experts need a high level of IT understanding to ensure the technological prerequisites and advancements of distribution systems, data standards, etc. knowledge of secure payment processing, customer protection, and data privacy also plays a role.
