IU International University produces NEW TEXTBOOK ON THE TOPIC OF "DISABILITY IN CARE"

• THE PRACTICAL HANDBOOK "CARING FOR DIVERSITY" WILL BE USED IN FUTURE IN THE DEPARTMENT OF REMEDIAL EDUCATION AT IU INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES.
• CARERS LEARN HOW TO BETTER PERCEIVE THE INDIVIDUAL NEEDS OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES.

Essen, 29 June 2021- Yesterday in Essen, the Competence Centre for Self-Determined Living NRW (KSL.NRW) presented its new practical handbook "Caring for Diversity" to the IU International University of Applied Sciences. The textbook will be used there in the future in the orthopaedagogy department to sensitise students to the individual needs of people with disabilities. The 280-page book follows the guiding principle of the disability movement "Nothing about and without us".

"Orthopaedagogy[1]  at IU International University of Applied Sciences stands for innovative and practice-oriented teaching. This also includes knowing the real challenges of people with disabilities to be able to take them into account later in professional practice," said Prof. Gwendolin Bartz, Professor of Inclusive Education and Orthopaedagogy. "Until now, the topics of care and education, as well as disability, have tended to be considered separately in terms of disciplines. Only in recent years have they been thought of together theoretically. The KSL practical handbook will become a standard textbook for teaching."

Andreas Tintrup, project manager of KSL Arnsberg, said: "We are pleased that IU International University of Applied Sciences will use our practical handbook. Our aim is for it to become established as a clear and at the same time very comprehensive textbook on the subject of disabilities at all nursing schools and universities offering nursing courses in North Rhine-Westphalia." The book is a good guide to implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which commits our society to "the highest attainable standard of health and wellbeing without discrimination based on disability".

At IU International University of Applied Sciences, almost 1000 students are currently studying orthopaedagogy via distance learning. After six semesters of standard study time, they complete their education with a Bachelor's degree and receive the title of state-recognised Remedial Teacher. Depending on their individual inclinations, orthopaedagogy graduates may work in remedial education institutions such as kindergartens or schools, retirement homes, clinics, counselling centres or rehabilitation facilities.
